Best Dog-Friendly Family Beaches on Anglesey

Anglesey does rugged coves, wide golden bays, dune-backed walks and everything in between, and the good news for dog owners is that most of it welcomes four-legged holidaymakers too. Are you ready for125 miles of beautiful coastline?

Whether you’re after a beach the kids can splash about in all day, or build sandcastles, or one where the dog can properly stretch its legs off the lead, here’s our pick of the best.

Lligwy Beach

Lligwy, Dulas, Moelfre LL70 9PQ
What3words ///contemplate.downsize.reworked

A proper family favourite on the east coast. Firm sandbanks form a shallow tidal pool that’s perfect for paddling with little ones, and it’s rarely as busy as you’d expect once summer’s over.

Dogs: Welcome all year round, no restrictions.

Bonus: Nearby Moelfre has a bronze statue of local lifeboat legend Dic Evans, and Ynys Dulas Island has a centuries-old tower once stocked with supplies for shipwrecked sailors.

Newborough Beach

Newborough Car park, Llanfairpwllgwyngyll LL61 6SG

What3words ///sniff.films.marked

Big dunes, a pine forest, and a tidal island with a ruined church dedicated to the Welsh patron saint of lovers, Newborough has range. Walk out to Ynys Llanddwyn (tide permitting) for one of the best views on the island, back across to Snowdonia.

Dogs: Welcome on the island year-round, on a short lead. Between 1 May and 30 September, they can’t join you on the western stretch between the entrance and the island, but the eastern end is open to them all year.

Handy to know: On-site large car park (pay-on-exit or RingGo), and toilets. Check the tide times before you set off, Llanddwyn Island gets cut off at high water.

A quieter, rockier cove on the wilder west coast, with sea views out toward Ireland and the Lobster Pot Restaurant right there for when you’re done exploring.

South of Rhosneigr, and one of the best for a proper blustery walk. Watersports lovers will find waves here, and Sawna Bach’s wood-fired sauna in the car park is a brilliant way to warm up after a dip.

Dogs: Welcome all year round, no restrictions, genuinely one of the easiest dog beaches on the island.

Traeth Mawr, Aberffraw

Aberffraw Car park LL63 5EX

What3words ///lunged.lavished.family

A local’s favourite that most visitors miss, simply because it takes a short walk from the village to reach. Follow the coastal path along the river and you’re rewarded with wide, uncrowded sand, and if you fancy extending the walk, St Cwyfan’s Church in the Sea isn’t far along the path.

Dogs: Welcome all year round.
